Arson is suspected in the Dordogne after four wildfires were reported to have started at very similar times in a single area yesterday (August 24).
The fires in the town of Montpon-Ménestérol destroyed at least 20 hectares of forest before firefighters managed to control the blaze.
A total of 110 firefighters and several helicopters and water bombers went to the scene, and several residents had to leave their homes. The fire broke out around 12:30 p.m. and was brought under control around 5 p.m.
Four new fires were reported the same day in an area of one square kilometer, leading firefighters to suspect arson.
Impressive fires in the Montpon sector this afternoon. Good luck to the deployed firefighters. Probably the work of the Double arsonist. pic.twitter.com/8otAKvE1lQ

Investigator says South West: “Such a combination of cases in the same place owes nothing to chance. The ‘fire jumps’ have been excluded, so we know that someone is behind it all.”
It is not the first time that arson has been suspected after a fire in the Dordogne this month. Between August 7 and 8, a series of fires in the same sectors of La Roche-Chalais and Parcoul-Chenaud destroyed more than 90 hectares, and prompted the gendarmerie to open an arson investigation.
Arson has also been widely suspected in a series of blazes across France in recent weeks and months, including the large Landiras fire in Gironde, which destroyed more than 20,000 hectares.
