French, a phenomenal French rapper and singer of Congolese descent, gave us a nostalgic experience through his single, ‘Wifey’. The magical story portrayed in the short musical drama can easily lasso anyone who is not a French speaker, despite being subject to the language barrier. At the start, we see our protagonist, Franglish, hanging out with his team. It’s impossible to ignore the only female counterpart in the group, not because she’s the only female, but because she’s devilishly beautiful.

Amid all the chatter, a strange mime appears and challenges Franglish to a magic trick. With little hesitation, he accepts, consequently entering a mysterious magic cabin. This is where the music enters the room. The classic R&B we used to woo our high school crushes. “Wifey” is reminiscent of early 2000s R&B that we miss and wish we heard more often. How much more classic can R&B be than having the singer dance under a lamppost to seduce a lover? One could cite a few references to Chris Brown’s must-have hit, “Forever,” noting the camera spins around Franglish amid flickering lights. In this magical fantasy, Franglish’s love interest is the girl we saw before. Pulses of nostalgia rush through my spine as I watch the two lovebirds chat via the classic street phone booths. The visuals complement a relatively sad ending. Franglish returns from Magic Land, returning to reality where he remains in the friend zone. Watch the magical story of ‘Wifey’ below.
