France on Wednesday sought to play down growing divisions in its strained relations with Germany as their leaders met in Paris for a lunch held in lieu of a joint ministerial meeting

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News/Sputnik – October 26, 2022) France on Wednesday sought to play down growing divisions in its strained relations with Germany as their leaders gathered in Paris for a lunch held in place of a joint ministerial meeting .

Asked by a journalist to comment on the “known and numerous” disagreements between the two, French government spokesman Olivier Veran claimed that the Franco-German duo had made considerable progress in all areas over the past five years.

“The visit of the German Chancellor to the Elysée for a meeting with the President of the Republic proves that this friendship is very much alive and that we want to move forward together and overcome the difficulties that arise from time to time when the priorities of the two countries do not match not quite converge,” he said.

Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz shook hands and smiled for the camera as they walked towards the Elysée Palace. They were due to sign a joint statement at the annual ministerial council, but this was postponed until January 2023, reportedly due to their differences over energy and defense issues.
