As artistic partners and collaborators, artists of Chinese origin, Huang Yong Ping and Shen Yuan, investigated what it means to live in their adopted city, Paris. With the passing of Yong Ping many years ago, this achievement can no longer be achieved by words, but by art. To commemorate the final collaboration between the two, the Parisian gallery Kamel Mennour presents an exhibition of works entitled “Paris is burning? 2019 ”
Having lived for 30 years in the world capital of love and beauty, the two men began to recognize Paris as a city equally known for violence and rebellion. From the French Revolution, the Restoration, the Prussian invasion and the Paris Commune, to the two world wars, the student movement of 1968, as well as a series of terrorist attacks since the 1970s. Yong Ping and Yuan set about ruminate, do you have to feel the burning fire that makes the heart of the city beat to become truly Parisian?
The charm of Paris and the image of fire are now inextricably linked.
The art on display explores this premise through a series of large-scale sculptures and installations. One of them is a huge recreated spire that looks like the one that fell from Notre Dame in April 2019. “The flames that consumed the spire rose into the sky and stayed there for a long time,” Yuan said. in an interview in 2020. “It was like a divine sacrifice. Even today, thinking of Paris, it is difficult to forget this fire, which makes me think that the charm of Paris and the image of fire are now inextricably linked.
