The National Opera of Greece has announced the revival of the production of “Andrea Chénier” by Umberto Giordano and Luigi Illica. The opera will take place from January 29 to February 29. 13 in the Stavros Niarchos room.
The title role will be shared by tenors Marcelo Puente and Marcelo Álvarez, while sopranos Cellia Costea and Eva-Maria Westbroek will play the role of Maddalena di Coigny. Meanwhile, baritones Dimitri Platanias and Elchin Azizov will share the role of Carlo Gérard. The supporting roles will be played by Marissia Papalexiou, Chrysanthi Spitadi, Julia Souglacou, Harris Andrianos, Dionysios Sourbis, Yanni Yannissis, Vagelis Maniatis, George Mattheakakis, Yannis Kalyvas, Christos Kechris, Dionisios Melogiannidis, Vagelis Maniatis, Marinos Tarnanas and Dionysos Tsantinis.
The recovery team includes direction by Ion Kessoulis, choreography by Stratos Papanousis and lighting designed by Christos Tzigkas. Agathangelos Georgakatos is the choir master and Philippe Auguin conducts.
The opera follows the life of the French and Greek revolutionary and poet Andrea Chénier (1762-1794). The music explores the clash between social groups during the French Revolution and incorporates traditional songs and dances of the time.
This production is part of the Greek Revolution bicentenary tribute in 2021 and is funded by a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
