These celebrities and officials with notoriously short tenures show Liz Truss isn’t alone

CNN

After just six weeks in office, Liz Truss announced on Thursday that she would step down as British Prime Minister.

His tenure was historically short and mostly unsuccessful: Truss’ economic program threw markets into disarray and saw the value of the pound against the US dollar fall to an all-time low.

For these reasons, her departure was not unexpected: critics had recently pitted her against a head of lettuce to see which of them would last the longest. The iceberg lettuce had just started to wilt when Truss made his announcement.

Truss is Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister, but she’s far from the only public figure to have spent surprisingly little time in senior office. From the ninth U.S. President William Henry Harrison and young King Louis XIX to NFL coach Bill Belichick and comedian Conan O’Brien, here are some of the most famous short terms among politicians, monarchs and celebrities.

White House Communications Director: 10 days

For just over a week in July 2017, Scaramucci, a longtime associate of former President Donald Trump, served in the Trump administration. He was the third person to serve as White House communications director since May of that year, CNN reported at the time. But during those 10 days, Scaramucci was perhaps too outspoken, even for an administration that defies convention: He repeatedly criticized former chief of staff Reince Priebus in interviews with The New Yorker and CNN’s New Day. He was ousted before the end of the month and became a vocal critic of Trump.

William Henry Harrison only served a month before dying of pneumonia.

The US President: 32 days

Harrison, the former governor of Indiana Territory responsible for negotiating treaties with Native Americans who drove them off their land and settled white settlers there, was elected president in 1840 but soon fell ill with a cold. The common cold turned into pneumonia, which killed him just over a month into his sentence. His tenure was the shortest of any US president, according to White House records.

Bill Belichick resigned as head coach of the New York Jets just a day after accepting the job in 2000.

New York Jets Head Coach: One day

The NFL titan had a turbulent day as head coach of the New York Jets in 2000. Apparently appointed to the position by his mentor and former head coach, Bill Parcells, he resigned a day later, informing the Jets reception staff of his abrupt departure. with a hastily written note in shorthand (ESPN reported that he wrote that he would no longer be “NYJ’s HC”).

Belichick is now best known as the longtime leader of the New England Patriots, which he joined shortly after dropping out of the Jets. Of all the current NFL head coaches, he has spent the most time with the same team — he recently entered his 23rd season in charge of the Patriots. Around the world, long-suffering Jets fans may never forgive him.

Michael Flynn served as President Donald Trump's national security adviser for less than a month.

White House National Security Advisor: 24 days

Less than a month after Trump’s inauguration in 2017, Flynn, a retired lieutenant general, was forced to resign after “misleading” then-Vice President Mike Pence and Priebus about his talks with a Russian ambassador to the United States. His legal troubles worsened later that year when he was accused of lying to the FBI as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. pleaded guilty to the charge, but Trump, still an ally of Flynn after the White House adviser left, pardoned him shortly before leaving office in 2020.

Wife of King Henry VIII: Six months

Anne of Cleves, fourth wife of King Henry VIII, survived her marriage to the often married/divorced/widowed king, unlike three of his wives. Their relationship was a political arrangement designed to use the power and influence of the House of Cleves, but Henry was not enamored with his young wife (she had the misfortune to follow Jane Seymour, Henry’s favorite wife ). The marriage was annulled six months later, but the two remained on good terms, with Anne occasionally visiting Henry at court before his death.

Conan O'Brien's iteration of

Host of “The Tonight Show”: Seven months

In 2009, NBC made a major show when it passed the reins of its signature late-night talk show from veteran host Jay Leno to the sharp but experienced O’Brien. And then, less than a year later, O’Brien was replaced by Leno after arguments over the show’s time slot and muted reaction to Leno’s own prime-time show. O’Brien eventually returned late night on TBS, but his run on “The Tonight Show” was the shortest of all his hosts.

Kings of France and Portugal, respectively: 20 minutes

Louis-Antoine’s father, King Charles X, served for six years before abdicating the throne in 1830. As heir apparent, Louis-Antoine became King Louis XIX…until he also abdicated 20 minutes later, according to the French Embassy in the United States. The late Frenchman still holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest reigning monarch in history, sharing the title with Prince Luís Filipe, who was also king for 20 minutes. His unhappy reign followed the assassination of his father, Dom Carlos I, and ended when he also died of wounds from the same attack that killed his father.

Cast Members: From four days to less than one season

“Saturday Night Live” remains one of the most important showcases for comedic talent, but many acclaimed performers have struggled to find their footing on the schedule. Laurie Metcalf and Ben Stiller only lasted a handful of episodes. The late Gilbert Gottfried went through about half a season before being fired. At least two comics have been hired but never appeared on the show: ‘SNL’ dropped stand-up Shane Gillis in 2019 days after his casting announcement when critics discovered racist jokes and other offensive comments he had made on various podcasts. Beloved Canadian comedian Catherine O’Hara stepped down a week after joining the cast. Almost all of them, however, found success away from Studio 8H.
