This brand new property in Pondicherry is an absolute paradise waiting to be discovered!

As our car left the surroundings of Pondicherry that we know and love so much and moved further south, my only worry was, where were we going? So my worried heart jumped for joy when I saw a small sign pointing towards Arikamedu. The same Arikamedu in Kakkayanthope, Aryankuppam commune – who not so recently proved the antiquity of Tamil culture and made it an irrefutable fact! This joy only turned into sheer elation when our car pulled into the driveway of the Radisson Resort Pondicherry Bay a few minutes later.

Never judge a book by its cover, we are told. Never judge a book by what part of the library it’s in – we should be told that, and this beautifully located property has convinced me why. Nestled between villages on one side, a lagoon on the other and an internationally renowned beach on the other end, the resort is a sight for weary eyes.

With a mix of Tamil and French architectural styles originating in Pondicherry, expect large white verandas blending into Tamil-style windows with native jaalis and the like. You are welcomed to the resort at an air-conditioned all-day cafe called Arikamedu where your check-in formalities are completed as you are served a glass of chilled buttermilk and a complimentary hat to shield you from the unforgiving sun. You’re then escorted to your room—you can choose between chalets and villas with different views (garden or lagoon)—then allowed to recuperate until you’re ready to explore the sprawling property’s offerings.

Infused with a burst of energy, thanks to the well-planned check-in, we leave our rooms in no time and enthusiastically dive into the 2,400 square foot Moroccan-themed pool called Salt Splash. This pool, one of the only salt water pools in Pondicherry, is also equipped for hydrotherapy and has a few Jacuzzi nozzles at one end only for your tactile enjoyment.

Next, we head to Bay Bistro, the property’s only restaurant, and choose to indulge in a lovely spread of their Anglo-French connections menu. A hearty lunch calls for a nice leisurely siesta, but instead we choose to take advantage of their Bodhi Spa’s complimentary foot massage. The spa, designed to relax and rejuvenate you, is one of the largest spas in the Radisson group of properties and is very aesthetically designed, offering a wide range of services.

It’s already 5:00 p.m. and we’re told that Eden Beach, the Blue Flag sandy beach, might close soon, so we head out for an evening stroll. It is, as promised, one of the cleanest beaches in India and surprisingly not that crowded for a weekend. Risk it, however, only once the sun has set, as the Pondicherry sun is notorious for its tendency to tan and how!

Once the moon rose and we finally decided to go back to our rooms, we were so exhausted that in-room dinner was the only option we could afford. A hot soup later, we fell asleep only to be woken up by our breakfast call. Breakfast, as expected, was a long and laborious affair and with our bellies full we walked away from the room to finally check in and head back into town.

The resort is a perfect getaway for someone who wants a quick vacation, and luxury defines everything the property offers – the rooms, the food, and the amenities. There are also indoor and outdoor playgrounds for kids, thoughtful event routes hosted by the property, and a fitness center in case you want to burn off those extra calories. The only thing that left us sad was that Arikamedu is now officially closed so we couldn’t satiate the archeology enthusiast inside.

Accessible by road, rail and air.
